Dear Panam Member National Authorities:

I am pleased to make the following announcement:

As of today, 10 March 2021, Panam Sports has confirmed that Panam Sailing’s proposal to replace our 1-person Dinghy (Open) event, historically held in Sunfish, with 2 events (below) has been approved:

1-person Regional Dinghy – Men to be sailed in the Sunfish
1-person Regional Dinghy – Women to be sailed in the Sunfish

As a result, we are pleased to announce that the number of Medal events at the Santiago 2023 Panam Games will be 12 events, an increase of 1 from the 11 awarded at the Lima 2019 Panam Games, which was an increase of 1 from the 10 medals awarded at the 2015 Toronto Panam Games.

This increase in Medals will NOT increase the 168 Athlete Quota places from Lima 2019. Although, as previously announced, 4 Gold Medalists at the Cali 2021 Junior Panam Games will be an additional 4 Named Athletes at the Santiago 2023 Panam Games, so the final athlete total for Santiago 2023 will be 172 athletes.

The entire slate of Sailing Events at the Santiago 2023 Panam Games will be:

It is anticipated, based on our discussions with World Sailing, that all 8 events that will be held at the Paris 2024 Olympics, indicated by the “(Olympic)” in the above Table, will serve as Country Qualifying Events for Paris 2024. The distribution of the 168 + 4 Named athlete quota among the 12 events will be announced at the same time as the Country Qualifying System, which we anticipate will be announced in the November 2021 time-frame, 2-years prior to the Santiago 2023 Panam Games.

As an interesting note, the Snipe Class has been used in every Panam Games that has included Sailing (only Mexico City 1955 did not include Sailing), and the Lightning is the second longest included Equipment Class, only missing the 1951 and 2003 Pan Am Games.

All of this will be posted on our Website, www.PanamSailing.org, once the PageMaker company completes its system-wide upgrade and releases our site back to us.

With warm regards,

Fred Hagedorn
Panam Sailing, President (Acting)
